The aspect ratio in Xavier Dolan’s film, Mommy

Hardly an original reaction, but I was stunned with the intimacy and realism of the 1:1 aspect ratio chosen by Xavier Dolan for his groundbreaking film Mommy, my film of the year so far. This aspect ratio’s intimacy shouldn’t be a surprise as it’s broadly similar to the aspect ratio in which we share our own, by definition, intimate videos using our phones.

This made me think what other filmmakers of various styles and eras may have made of this aspect ratio, such as Ingmar Bergman for his close-ups of the face and Lars von Trier for his Dogme 95 and related hand-held work.





The final frame grab I made showing Xavier Dolan himself—as we should expect—is also well aware of this.
